Lyle J. Porter
1925 - 2018

Lyle Judson Porter (Casper) passed away on May 25, 2018 at his home in Primrose Retirement Center. He was born in Albion, NE, the son of Donavan & Grace (Wilson) Porter on July 15, 1925. After graduation from Albion High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country in the South Pacific during WWII on LSM 174, a landing craft involved in the battles of Okinawa & Guadalcanal. He received an Honorable Discharge as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class. One of the many highlights of his life was attending the Wyoming Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2010.

On June 15, 1946 he married Shirley Thompson of St. Edward, NE, who was the love of his life for over 71 years. They lived in Columbus, NE before moving to Casper, WY in 1963 and to this union were three sons and one daughter. He was an auto mechanic and worked for the old Nolan, Schulte and Shellabarger Chevrolet dealerships and later as a diesel mechanic for Salt Creek Freightways until his retirement in 1984. After retirement Lyle and Shirley enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family and wintering for 21 years at their second home in Florida. He was an avid outdoorsman and engulfed his family in hunting and fishing while spending lots of time enjoying our mountain cabin. Lyle was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Good Sam Club, DAV, VFW, Eagles, and American Legion. He is truly a great role model and hero to our family and a fantastic husband, father and grandpa.

Lyle is survived by his wife, 3 sons Jim (Terry), Bob (Peggy), Dana (Debby) all of Casper and 1 daughter Sue (Bob) Quinlan of Lakewood, CO, 10 grandchildren (spouses), 8 great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, 2 brothers and will be greatly missed and loved forever by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, and 1 brother.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Prince of Peace Church Pre-School or an organization of donor’s choice.

A public viewing will be held from 5 - 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 30th at Newcomer Funeral Home and his memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 10:00 am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Lyle will rest in peace at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville, WY.
