Der Sandra, Lexi and family, I just have received the sad news of Steven's death and offer my prayers and sorrow as you endure his loss. I remember a very spirited and lively man, who although I met only a few times, made a lasting and delightful remembrance thru these many years since. Your old friend from WSTS, Mary Lynch Marler.
~ Mary Marler - January 24, 2021
He was always smiling. Greeted me very nicely. Will miss him and Dr Mossbrook will miss him.

Steve was a member of the Mission Hills croquet club, president for a few years, then treasurer of the United States Croquet Association, and then past president, always helping Nicholas Gray and grooming Bill Frazer into president and next president roles. It was always fun staying with Steve at his condo with his wife Sandy. I often got to sleep in Sandy's bed if she was not there, but lately, Sandy had found a love for Palm Springs as well as Steve had.
In August of 2017, I had the pleasure of flying my Piper Arrow airplane into Riverton, WY loaded with my Astro Physics telescope and Losmandy mount. We had planned on viewing the full solar eclipse in the next day or two and I had forgotten to bring a metallic bar that the counterweight attached to the mount. We ended up making an alternative bar using an old broom handle, some leather strapping and thankfully it held and the weight did not fall onto anyone's foot. The eclipse was viewed by Sandy, Steve, his daughter, their children, Phyllis and Jim Butts, Kory and Betty Teoman. it was spectacular and we all enjoyed the fun.
Steve and I would often talk about piloting small planes. Steve used to travel to many croquet tournaments through General Aviation airports. He loved playing golf, pool and croquet.
He will be dearly missed by all of his friends.
Sandy and family, I am truly sorry for your loss. Steve was always driving for something better and becoming more and more polished at the games he loved. I am glad that we did get to know each other a bit more than 'just around the courts'. Steve was a hard worker and a true lover of the game of croquet. I am glad to have had the trip to Wyoming to get to know his love for that state as well. Thanks for the trip to the rocks.

Dear Sandra and Family,
I was in the Class of ‘64 at Harley with Steve. He was a kind and caring classmate. He was always a enthusiastic member of the Harley alumni class of ‘64. My husband and I extend our sincerest sympathies. Steve was a “one of a kind.”

What a great friend and classmate!!!
At several of our class reunions he would always kid me about gaining weight and I would tell him, "At least I don't have white hair!!!"
He also asked me how he got the nickname, "Jungle"?! I told him it was because he played basketball like he was in a jungle!!
Steve was a wonderful friend to have at Harley! I was lucky to have known him! He will be missed!

Steve and I met at Pinehurst about 8 or 10 years ago. We played as partners and foes, always fun and good competition. Once I set him up at wicket #6 four times in a match. He stuffed it each time. Good for a laugh , and the only way I could possibly be one up on him. It' s so sorrowful and such a waste to lose one like him to covid! I send you my condolences. Kelley Newton

I only met Steve a few times at croquet tournaments, but I know by his reputation that he was a beloved player, a friend of everyone he met, and an excellent ambassador for the sport. His infectious smile and winning personality charmed us all. On behalf of the Board of the Croquet Foundation of America, Inc., and I'm sure I speak for all croquet players that knew him, we send our sincere condolences. He will be greatly missed.

Steve was that special friend that any guy would like to have. I am very honored to have made his acquaintance and become friends with this most extraordinary human being. Steve was a force of nature. Always pasionate, dedicated and friendly, though at times could come out as brash. He can always be relied on to get a job done. His commitment to make things work was legendary. He relied on people to do their part in any team endeavor but did not hesitate to jump in to save the day if it was needed. He served as president of our Mission Hills Croquet Club in CA where he loved to play, mostly at championship level. He loved to tinker and take care of our equipment, while leaving the day to day management to those best suited to address those needs. He also was a founding member of our Illiterates Club. All our Illiterati will be missing his laugh and wit terribly, I know I am and will. We will plan a great Illiterati send off to Steve at our very next meeting. I was very privileged to meet and get to know his family in WY when he invited a bunch of us to his home there on the occasion of the full Solar Eclipse a few years back. Sandy, his wife of a lifetime, we will be here when you decide to come back to Sunny CA. We would have liked to be with you in person during these trying times but be assured we are with you in spirit. Betty and I are sending to the entire family our thoughts and prayers with our sympathy.
~ Kory Teoman - November 16, 2020
Steve was special. A real character. The kind of person you don't run into every day. He could be outrageous and mischievous but an evening with Steve was always filled with laughter and camaraderie. He was a great croquet player and always willing to help any new player in any way he could. He had a kind heart.
Losing Steve made the world an emptier place.
~ Jean Engebretson - November 15, 2020
So many memories of good times and laughs in college. We had so many insecurities and Steve expressed them well. And we all grew up I thank him for helping me get here. With love and sorrow.
~ Susan Leonard - November 15, 2020
After the December school break Steve met up with me and two others to drive from Buffalo back to Oberlin. I was the driver. Traffic was heavy and Steve gave me a driving tip (having to do with watching the wheels of other vehicles). I think of him every time I use it, which means I have thought of him often on the past 54 years. What a good guy.

My condolences go out to Steve's family. I will especially miss Steve every time we go to Mesquite to play golf. To me he was an icon of the annual golf trip. I just always expect to see him there. I believe he will always be there we just won't get to see him anymore but we will be thinking of him.

I have a ton of good memories of Steve. From Lander Golf Course to Riverton Country Club.
I certainly will miss him. My condolences to the family.

I became friends with Steve when he began playing croquet again at Mission Hills. We shared many good times at tournaments and would sit around the courts swapping stories. I know he did a great job as president of MHCC and the treasurer of the USCA. He was a source of good advice and counsel. Above all, he was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. It is difficult to express how much he will be missed in our croquet family.
~ Michael Orgill - November 9, 2020
Steve and I met while serving together on the USCA's management committee. He was always gracious with his time, offering help whenever I asked. Although I never had the chance to play with or against him, he will be remembered. Thank you Steve, for the memories.

Dear Sandy and Family,
Steve’s smile, laugh, and sense of humor will be forever missed. So, so sorry. Grateful for many years of fond memories. Thanks in particular for opening your home for such a lovely party at Mission Hills. The trips west will never be the same. Love and light, “the other Sandy...” (as Steve often jested) Knuth
