Ernie and I first met at a limestone quarry just south of Sundance when we were reclaiming abandoned bentonite mines. Because we both believe God first, Family second, and everything else in life third….we quickly became very close friends. We were old wrestlers so carrying on conversations about our wrestling feats was easy. I’m pretty sure that the stories became inflated and exaggerated as we aged! We hunted pheasants, went on motorcycle rides, golfed, and camped together. I have never met a more loyal friend.
Ernie was my Project Manager on reclamation and restoration projects that span almost 30 years. Because of our efforts, we were nationally recognized for excellence by the United States Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation who awarded us the coveted “People’s Choice Award” associated with the Snake River Project. We received numerous “Letters of Excellence” from State Agencies; the Shoshone National Forest (Kirwin and Double Dee), Idaho State University (preservation of critical Boreal Toad habitat in the greater Yellowstone area); the Cities of Lovell and Sheridan; and Wyoming’s Governor Mr. Jim Geringer (2003).

Grandpa was my grandpa, my dad, and my friend. He raised me when he didn't have to and supported me even into my adult life. When an obstacle came grandpa would say we will figure it out. The great-grandkids loved to run to his room and collect all his loose change. I would often call to find out where the heck in Wyoming I was lost at and grandpa always knew where to go and how to get me home. We shared a love for the mountains and fishing. He called Grandma, Cassie, and I "nawneewahhonee" - little wind that blew from behind - we were his little farts. To find out later in life it wasn't our actual Indian names but grandpa made it up for us. He loved his moccasins which has intrigued my love for moccasins as well. We spent the last few Christmas at the VFW with grandpa and those have been the best times for us all knowing grandpa never forgets to put us on the list. Grandpa was a good man who loved us kids. He taught me math, he took me on road trips, he provided for me and he loved me. I always had a home where Grandpa Ernie was - Grandpa was my home. I will miss you every day Grandpa Ernie - I don't know how to live without you. I love you.
