Charles Leroy Hendryx, known affectionately to family and friends as "Poohbear," passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming. Charles was born on August 6, 1950, in Rawlins, Wyoming, to Charles and Doris (Manning) Hendryx. Charles lived a life marked by devotion to family, distinguished service, and an unmistakable zest for life that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A graduate of Natrona County High School, Charles answered the call of duty by enlisting in the United States Navy. His military service was marked by a moment in history that he carried with pride; in 1969, he was part of the crew on the USS Hornet’s recovery raft when astronaut Neil Armstrong re-entered the Earth's atmosphere during the Apollo 11 mission. This extraordinary chapter in his life exemplified his commitment and courage.
Following his naval service, Charles dedicated many years to his career at Excal before retiring. His work ethic was matched only by his magnetic personality—quite the character, known for keeping spirits high, never allowing a dull moment to pass, and often "chasing them girls" with a whirlwind of humor and jest.
Charles was a devoted family man. He is survived by eight children and numerous grandchildren, who bring light and joy to his legacy. A brother, David Hendryx, along with numerous nieces and nephews, also survive him. His family treasured the moments he spent with them, particularly his grandchildren, with whom he shared countless memories. His granddaughter fondly recalls him watching her dance, embodying a grandfather’s pride and care. Charles was a passionate supporter of his grandchildren’s sports and a true bargain shopper, always finding joy in the simple pleasures of life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, two brothers, Jim and Ronald Hendryx, his sister Skeeter, and his partner of 18 years, Laura Cherry. Despite these losses, Charles's life was filled with love, laughter, and a community enriched by his presence.
Charles Leroy Hendryx will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, his dedication to those he loved, and his role in one of America’s most iconic moments in space exploration. He leaves behind a family that cherishes his memory and a community that admired his character and warmth. His story is one of service, family, and a life well-lived, remembered fondly by all who had the honor to know him.
