Surrounded by her beloved family, Cynthia Ann Henrie, 84, passed away on September 16, 2025, in Casper following a brief illness. Born May 26, 1941, in Denver, Colorado, to Clarence and Ruby Coleman, Cynthia attended South High School, where she was active in music and theater. A notable mezzo soprano, she performed for civic and community events in Denver as a young woman, and went on to study music and education at the University of Denver. Cynthia was a student in DU’s Lamont School of Music and it was there that she met her future husband, Monte L. Henrie, a lean and handsome baritone who shared her love of opera and musicals. They married in Denver in 1961, and following graduation in 1962, the couple made their home in Casper, where they raised their three children, Monte, Jr., Mariellen “MarKay”, and Shawna.
From 1967 to 2006, Cynthia taught music and drama to many of Casper’s elementary school children. The Henries both taught private piano and voice lessons, with Cynthia giving youngsters a musical start and Monte taking over when the students reached their teen years. Always a team and always looking for ways to enrich the lives of their community and their students through music and theater, together the Henries taught the Summer Drama program through the Natrona County Public School system. This last endeavor gave rise to the Tenderfoot Traveling Troupe, in which Casper teens performed Old West Melodrama at historic sites around the state. Cynthia was also active in the choral life of the United Methodist Church and established and directed the children’s choir.
Cynthia, along with her husband, had a talent for seeing—and bringing out—the best in students. Some would go on to perform themselves, but they all carried the Henries’ love of music and gift for laughter into their adult lives. Most recently, her great-grandchildren became her piano, voice, and drama students. Cynthia and Monte enjoyed all forms of live theater, especially opera, and Cynthia volunteered for arts events and the Wyoming Symphony. Following Monte’s death in 2024, Cynthia continued to volunteer and stayed sharp by taking classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Casper College.
Cynthia Henrie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Dona Lee Gates. She is survived by her children, Monte L. Henrie, Jr., Mariellen (Mike) Elmore, both of Casper, and Shawna Hibbler of Cheyenne; her grandchildren, Tony (Amy) Elmore, Michael (Danielle) Elmore, Jr., and Jocelyn (Wayne) Weckworth, William Hibbler, and Coleman Hibbler; and great-grandchildren, Paxton, Ellie, Gavin, Winnie, Addison, and Mira. A celebration of Cynthia’s life will be held on October 10, 2025, at 4:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 302 E. 2nd Street, Casper, with a reception to follow at the Range. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Casper Children’s Theater.
