Listen to Obituary

Dorla “Dodie” Inez (Thompson) Place passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming, surrounded by her daughter, Ailene. She was born on November 26, 1937, in Cincinnatus, New York to Ernest and Carrie (Genson) Thompson.

Dorla spent her early years in New York and attended McGraw High School in McGraw through the 10th grade. She then left school to go to work, beginning a life marked by strength, determination, and hard work. Over the years, she worked in steel factories and at a steel mill for 17 years. She also worked at Higgins Supply and Brewster Factory.

She was a very strong lady who took excellent care of her friends and was known for having a sharp tongue. Dorla enjoyed life in simple and meaningful ways. She loved window shopping and going for drives to watch ducks play in the water. She liked fishing and enjoyed trips to Deadwood and Riverton. When she was younger, she loved the outdoors and snowmobiling. She also enjoyed spending time with friends, going to lunch, and playing cards, especially Pitch and Rummy.

Dorla had a generous and creative spirit. She loved crocheting and made items for Hospice events. She also enjoyed making cupcakes and popcorn, and she made earrings and necklaces for everyone, giving them away as gifts. Gathering with family and friends brought her great happiness, and she dearly loved all of her grandchildren. She was also proud to be a member of the Eagles.

She is survived by her daughters, Ailene Miller, Deanna King, and Charlee Deselms. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Dawn Hammon, Carrie Lubgate, April Dennison, Jamie Powell, Mark Miller, Matt Miller Jr., and James Strader. Each of them was an important part of her life, and her love for her family was one of the clearest joys of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Wittling, who passed in 1969, and Hallie Russell, who passed in 1994; her son-in-law, Matt Miller Sr.; her father, Ernest Thompson; her mother, Carrie Stevens; and her sister, Eva Euson.

A memorial service will be held on November 10, 2026, at 1:00PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 710 E 2nd St, Casper, Wyoming.

Dorla will be remembered for her strength, her generosity, her love of family and friends, and the many simple kindnesses she shared with others. Her memory will remain a lasting gift to those who knew and loved her.
