Duane Edwin Baumgartner

Duane E. Baumgartner, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Casper, Wyoming, on July 19, 2026.

Born on April 19, 1932, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Duane was the youngest of four children born to Casper Baumgartner and Myrtice A. Baumgartner. He grew up with his brothers and sister and carried throughout his life the warmth, humor, and easygoing spirit that made him so dearly loved by his family.

Duane earned his master’s degree and built a life centered on creativity, learning, and service. He taught college-level art in Texas and North Dakota before spending the majority of his career at Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he taught art and journalism. He shared his love of art with generations of students, encouraging them not only to create, but to see the world with curiosity and imagination.

His influence extended far beyond the classroom. Duane was deeply involved in the Rapid City community, serving on several boards, including the City’s Historic Preservation Board, and supporting organizations such as the Dahl Art Museum and the Dakota Artists’ Guild. His dedication to the arts and to his community was recognized in 1999, when he was named an Honoree of the Rushmore Cultural Arts Honors.

To his family, Duane was more than an educator and artist - he was the fun-loving uncle, the one whose presence brought laughter, warmth, and fond memories. He also had a true love for animals, especially his beloved Westie dogs and cats. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his lively spirit, and the genuine joy he brought to family gatherings and to the lives of those around him.

Duane was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Jerold, and his sister, Patricia.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lorna Baumgartner, and by seven nieces and one nephew, who will cherish the memories they shared with him and remember him always with love.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 22 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The time and location are still being finalized and will be shared when available.

Duane will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, former students, and all whose lives were brightened by his kindness, humor, and generous spirit.
