James Gary Dean passed away at Mountain Plaza Assisted Living and Memory Care October 9, 2025. Born September 1, 1936 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, he moved, with his family, to Sheridan in 1945. He attended schools in Sheridan graduating from Sheridan High School in 1955. He was drafted by Selective Service and served two years in the US Army.
Returning to Sheridan, he worked with his father at the Sherwin Williams store in Sheridan, then transferred to Casper, where he eventually became manager of Sherwin Williams here. He retired from Sherwin Williams in 1992.
He never married but was very popular with the children of his friends, many of whom considered him an uncle.
Jims passion was hunting and fishing, particularly fly fishing. He fished the Seychelles, Kamchatka, the Bonefish flats of the Bahamas, among others. The North Platte River was his home fishery and he fished it even in winter. Hunting was conducted at acreage in northern Sheridan County in which he was a part owner and involved, primarily, elk.
He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Bill.
No services are planned and his ashes will be scattered, at a later date, at the Sheridan County location in which he was part owner, along with those of his parents.
