James (Jim) Russell Nielsen

James (Jim) Russell Nielsen, 82, passed away at home in Casper, Wyoming, on September 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born on May 16, 1943, in Portland, Oregon, to Finley (“Slim”) and Ellen Nielsen. He spent his early childhood in Upham, North Dakota, before his family relocated to Greybull, Wyoming, where he graduated from Greybull High School in 1961.
In February 1962, Jim proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as an electronics technician. Following his service, he worked for the Mobil refinery until its closure in 1967, then returned to Greybull to help his father open the Green Oasis Campground. In 1969, Jim began his long career with Little America Refinery, where he dedicated more than 42 years of service before retiring in 2011.
Jim will be deeply missed by his wife of nearly 54 years, Carol; his daughters Kristin (Eric) Saul and Andrea (Shawn) Trout of Casper; and his cherished grandchildren Allison Saul of Salt Lake City, UT, and Gregory Saul of Casper. He is also survived by his brothers Roger Nielsen of Green River and Kurt Nielsen of Casper; sisters Ellen (Tom) Jacobsen of Green River and Karen Nielsen of Fort Collins, CO; and brother-in-law Bob Phegley of Casper. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Carole Phegley, and sisters-in-law Faye Nielsen and Gwen Nielsen.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville, Wyoming. A reception will follow at Meals on Wheels in Casper.
