Listen to Obituary

James N. Weinrich, affectionately known as “JW,” left this world on January 21, 2026, at the age of 81. He passed away peacefully at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, Wyoming—the city where he was born, built a life, and became something of a local legend—surrounded by an impressive gathering of family that could rival even the most crowded holiday dinner table.

Born on February 3, 1944, in Casper, JW was destined for a life full of hard work, laughter, wisecracks, and an almost obnoxious abundance of Tic Tacs. Alongside his brothers, he dedicated his life to running the family business, including Weinrich Frozen Food Locker, The Wine Rack Restaurant, and Bullwhip Catering—an enterprise established in 1953, long before cell phones distracted patrons from their meals. Together, they built a culinary legacy that served the community faithfully until retirement in 2021. Known affectionately as the “mayor at work,” JW had a nickname for everyone, chatted more than he probably worked, and made sure every customer left feeling like family.

A proud veteran, JW enlisted in the United States Army in February of 1961 and served in the elite 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. Honorably discharged in 1964, he carried the same dedication and enthusiasm into civilian life—whether running a business, jumping out of planes before mastering the art of hopping over bar stools in Las Vegas, or perfecting cocktail concoctions that could surprise even the most seasoned mixologist.

JW embraced life fully. He loved golfing, hunting, spirited trips to Las Vegas, and a good old-fashioned Christmas dice game—especially if there were winnings to share. Generous to his core, he found joy in giving, storytelling, and friendly competition, always with a pocket full of Tic Tacs and a grin ready to go.

Above all else, JW was a family man. He is survived by his beloved son, J.R. (Suzanne) Weinrich of Chino Valley, AZ, and his daughter, Tina (John) Hunsicker of Casper, Wyoming. He leaves behind a large and cherished family of grandchildren— K.C. (Shaelynn), Lane, Brad (Mary), Kyle and Erin, Brittney (Michael), Cody, Jordin (Cody), Brynne (Conn), and Madison—and 19 adored great-grandchildren. His proudest accomplishments were these sweet souls, each of whom he showered with affection, stories, nicknames, and perhaps a Tic Tac or two.

JW is also survived by his brother, David Weinrich, along with many nieces, and nephews, who will forever treasure memories filled with laughter, storytelling, and the occasional exaggerated hunting tale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lorene Weinrich; his brothers Bobby Weinrich and Tommy (Julie) Weinrich; and the mother of his children, Julia Weinrich-VanDerWilt. No doubt, they are now reunited at a grand family gathering—complete with a top-tier buffet and a competitive dice game underway.

JW lived his life with gusto, generosity, and heart, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. So raise a glass—or a Tic Tac—in his honor, keep the stories alive, and remember him the way he would want: laughing, sharing, and enjoying the moment.

A Celebration of Life is pending for early Summer of 2026.
