Listen to Obituary

John Richard Johnstone, 76, passed away peacefully in Casper after a hard-fought battle with metastatic cancer on August 6, 2025.

John was born to the late Robert and Varian Johnstone, August 24, 1948, in John Day Oregon. He felt working and getting out in the world took priority over school therefore, John obtained his GED and joined the Army where he served for two and half years and was in Vietnam for six months as a parachute rigger. He earned three service metals during his tour. John married Susan in May 1978, and they lived in Meeteetse throughout their marriage.

John was a truck driver in the oil field for over 40 years. He was known in the patch as “Stoney” and “The Legend”. He never seemed to meet a stranger, whether it was in the field or the Walmart aisle. John lived to fish. Rules didn’t apply and every trip was a contest. His last fishing trip at Pathfinder Reservoir in May landed him the biggest fish he’d ever caught, and he made sure everyone knew it. He grinned for days. John always said his kids taught him the joy of laughter and poking fun, but everyone knew he was the instigator and teacher.

John is survived by his wife Susan of 48 years, sister Sue Kelly of Council, ID; seven children: David Keser (Patrice) of Vernal, UT; Jonna Robb (Drew) of Grangeville, ID; Kevin Keser (Tanya) of Casper, WY; Justin Johnstone of Cody, WY; Shauna Morgan (Ryan) of Pinehurst, NC; Jason Johnstone (Tena) of Puyallup, Washington; and Jamie Johnstone (Christina) of Eatonville, Washington. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Bandit. John is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Varian Johnstone, brother Tom Johnstone, and sister Claudia Crawford.

At John’s request, no services are planned. A private scattering of his ashes will take place in the Summer of 2026 in Wyoming and Idaho. Condolences may be mailed to 6740 Rogue River Road, Casper, WY 82604.
