“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ret. Command Sgt. Lois Ann short Hefley. Lois was born on July 11, 1939, in Muncie Indiana to William and Naomi short. She spent her childhood like your typical farm girl, caring for animals and doing chores. She graduated from Harrison Township high school in 1957. After high school she attended nursing school, making her parents very proud. She enlisted in the Marine Corps, where she met Sgt. James Chumley Sr USMC at camp Lejeune in north Carolina, they married on July 6, 1959, in Onslow, north Carolina, and soon welcomed their children James R Chumley Jr in 1960, Belinda sue in 1961, when she found out that she was expecting again, the doctor assured them that they would be having another “Big Boy” come summer, and on may 5th 1963 they welcomed twin daughters Cheryl Ann and Sheila kay, William toy Chumley in 1964, Janice Charlene in 1967, and Debbie Lynn in 1969.

Lois left the marine corps to raise her children and eventually relocated to Wyoming where she worked at the V.A hospital in Cheyenne WY, for many years. She joined the national guard and eventually became a commander in guernsey WY, an accomplishment she was very proud of. Lois received many awards and medals throughout her military career. She loved traveling and even lost a stripe to take a once in a lifetime trip to Korea. She enjoyed cruises, one of which was in Alaska. After retiring from the V.A she traveled the country in her Winnebago before settling in burns WY where she continued nursing and later moving to Casper Wyoming to be closer to her daughter Cheryl and her family.

Lois was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends, she adored her great grandson Bentley, and she loved showing him off to her friends at meadow winds. Lois made a lot of friends at meadow winds like her friend Marty whom she cherished, Lois loved crafting, and chatting with her friends and she loved to read and let us not forget her unwavering love for her cans of monster.

Lois will be remembered for her independence and pride in being a marine and national guard member, also for being a little spicy as people affectionately referred to her as, and also for her inability to be told what to do, with everyone saying “oh Lois? She’s a little spicy, you can’t tell her what to do... you can but she’s not listening to you”. Lois is survived by her daughter Cheryl Gallegos who was always by her side, her granddaughter Jenna Gallegos, and her best buddy great grandson Bentley Gallegos, also her beloved cat Alice, along with her children James Jr, Belinda, Sheila, Janice, and Debbie, along with several grand children and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Naomi, her former husband James r Chumley Sr (sorry grandma), infant son William toy Chumley, sons-in-law Kenny pilcher, and john Gallegos, Grandson Luke pilcher and great- granddaughter Brooklynd Selena Gallegos. Lois requested that a service not be held for her, but for everyone she loved who loved her to celebrate her life and memories in their own ways, think of her the next time you drink a monster. Her ashes will be spread at a later time. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to Friscos friends ferret rescue in Casper Wyoming or to the Casper humane society. Lois will live on through her family and friends. Love you mom, love you grandma xoxo
