Mickey David Farrar

November 14, 1949 — April 25, 2025

Glenrock, Wyoming

Mickey David “Mick” Farrar, a longtime Glenrock resident and proud Wyoming native, passed away of natural causes on April 25, 2025, at Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper—the same hospital where he was born 75 years earlier.

Survived by Nancy, his wife of 17 years, Mick will be remembered as much for the mischievous glint in his eyes and booming laugh as for the immense pride he felt in his children, Kimberley Rae (Farrar) Edwards (Eric), and David Rush Farrar, and his “grandies”—Tolina, Ryan and Christina Edwards; Theodore “Teddy” Farrar; and Mason and Delaney Duke. Mick also leaves behind his buddy “Jack” his black Labrador Retriever.

An accomplished millwright and craftsman, Mick was also a passionate Winchester collector, lifelong owner of black Labrador Retrievers, and diehard fan of NASCAR races, Louis L'Amour novels and Gene Autry westerns. He lived by a simple motto—“If one is good, three is better!”—and never missed a chance to remind his friends and family that one should never be “short on mustard”.

Growing up in Casper, Mick attended Dean Morgan Junior High and graduated in 1968 from Kelly Walsh High School. As a youngster, Mick developed a love for hunting, fishing and trapshooting, spending many hours at the Rocky Mountain Gun Club working as a trap boy and helping his father, Dave. He also enjoyed telling countless tales of adolescent shenanigans, mostly at the expense of his younger brother and lifelong accomplice, Ray Farrar.

While studying at Casper College, Mick joined the college’s first trapshooting team. He later attended the University of Wyoming and eventually served as a past president of the Rocky Mountain Gun Club, where he was instrumental in helping to move it from its previous location on Bryan Stock Trail and K Street in Casper to its current home on Cole Creek Road.

A 51-year member of the Millwrights and Machinery Erectors Union, Mick started working at the Farrar Machine Shop owned by his uncle, Harry Farrar, where he became a proficient machinist and welder and began his career in industrial maintenance. As a millwright, Mick worked for many years as a contractor at Dave Johnston Power Plant, as well as most of Wyoming’s coal fired power plants and in industrial facilities throughout the surrounding region.

Mick’s first marriage in 1975 to Betty (Bryan) gave them the greatest joys of his life, children Kimberley and David. With his marriage to Nancy in 2008, his family grew to include two stepsons, John and Mike Duke.

Among Mick’s other proudest accomplishments was his vast collection of Winchester firearms and memorabilia, having spent his entire adult life building a (nearly complete) collection of pre-1964 models. He was called upon by many friends and family for his extensive knowledge of all the nuances of the wide variety of Winchester models and calibers.

In his free time, Mick enjoyed countless hours with his dad and brother in the shop, where much time was consumed machining a replica deck cannon that won many a trophy in live fire competitions across Wyoming. He was also a 50-year member of Casper’s Elks Lodge #1353.

In retirement, Mick took up wood carving and earned ribbons in local and state competitions for his wildlife carvings and caricatures of Old West characters. He enjoyed weekly meetings of the Deer Creek Woodcarvers Club, where he learned the finer points of carving from the club’s knowledgeable members, and gifted many of his carvings to close friends and family members who will cherish them forever. He also carved prayer crosses and enlisted his grandchildren, nieces and nephews to help him give them to veterans at the VA Hospice Care Center in Cheyenne. Mick’s final gift was to the Donor Alliance. Donate Life!

Along with his surviving family members mentioned above, Mick is survived by a sister-in-law, Gail Farrar; cousins, Marlys (Johnson) Shea, Jane (Mickelson) Sullivan, Mark Farrar, Cynthia (Farrar) Latka, and Clark Farrar; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David Woods Farrar, Thelma Adeline (Mickelson) Farrar and stepson John Duke..

At Mick’s request, no services are planned. A family celebration of his life will be held this summer at the family cabin on Casper Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Mick’s memory to any cancer research organization of the donor’s choice, or the Casper Humane Society.
