Nancy Kay (Miller) Waters was born on August 7, 1954 in Osage Iowa to Oral and Joan Miller and joined big brother David; later Nancy welcomed siblings Betty, Bob and Cyndi. The family lived and worked on a dairy farm and Nancy attended school in Iowa until 1960 when they moved to Douglas Wyoming and then onto Casper. Nancy attended Poison Spider Elementary School, CY Junior High School and Natrona County High School where she was active in track, basketball, sang in choir and played the guitar; Nancy graduated from NCHS in 1972. Nancy then attended Casper College and went on to work at Casper College, Mike Sullivan Law Office, Jerry Hiller Company and Mutual of New York. It was during this time that her dear friend, Mary Rager introduced her to Kenneth Waters. This was the beginning of a lifelong love story that lasted 49 years until she took her last breath on May 21, 2026. To this union three children were born, Benjamin Theodore, Sheryl Lynn and Brett Allen.
For the next 20 years Nancy raised her children and took care of her family. She was involved in all the kids’ school activities, made homemade Halloween costumes, baked and decorated special birthday cakes, and was always planning the next special family event or birthday party. She was active on the Library Committee, Drama Club and the School Post Office at Poison Spider Elementary School where the kids went to school.
She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for over 50 years where she was very active in the church choir, Lay Minister through The Stephen Ministries program, teacher and superintendent of OSL Sunday School and served on different church boards throughout the years. Nancy took vocal lessons at the college, was active in the Casper Civic Chorale, and also sang solos and duets for weddings, funerals and various church services.
In the fall of 1996 Nancy and Ken welcomed Jeanette Matthew into the family through the Foreign Exchange Student Program. Jeanette became Nancy’s second daughter, and they developed an unbreakable bond. Nancy loved to travel and in 1998 she got to travel to England and Scotland to visit Jeanette; this was a highlight of her life.
Nancy went to work at Lincare in 1998 and worked until 2007 when her first grandchild, Sonny Kayne was born. Kayne was followed by Kooper, Dillon, Addyson and Olivia; there was nothing more dear to Nancy’s heart than her five grandchildren. From the first grandchild on, “Nana” was present at every birthday, school concert, 4-H event, rodeo, football game, soccer game, music recital and basketball game. Winter weather was about the only thing that would stop her from being there for her grandkids.
Faith, family and music were Nancy’s passion – “Due unto others as you would have done unto you” is the core value she lived by and her life was a true reflection of that. In early 2025, Nancy was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. Through all of Nancy’s trials and struggles with dementia, she still attended church regularly, continued singing in Civic Chorale and spent as much time with family as she could.
Nancy joins in heaven her mother Joan Miller, father Oral Miller, mother-in-law May Arlene Waters, father-in-law Theodore Waters, sister-in-law Rosalie Harrison, brother-in-law Clyde Waters, brother-in-law Robert Waters, nephew Scott Miller and great-nephew, Milo James Miller, and many other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Nancy leaves behind her husband of 49 years, Ken, son Ben and Heather Waters, daughter Sherry, Shane, Kayne and Kooper Fisher, son Brett, Tiffany, Dillon, Addyson and Olivia Waters; brother David and Nancy Miller, sister Betty and Dale Birkle, brother Bob and Susi Miller and sister Cyndi Miller, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In-lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scott Alan Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund at Casper College, Wyoming Dementia Care or Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, June 5, 2026 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 318 East 6th Street in Casper.
