Robert “Bob” Eugene McGowan, born November 26, 1942, in Laramie, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming, surrounded by his two beloved children at Wyoming Medical Center. His journey through life was marked by enduring devotion—to family, to service, and to the countless friends and acquaintances who knew him as “Uncle Bob,” a guiding light and steadfast presence.
Bob’s story, woven through the quiet prairies of Wyoming and the foothills of Colorado, began with simple roots. After graduating from South High School in Colorado, he soon sought greater horizons. At merely seventeen, he met Eileen, the love of his life, through a mutual friend—a moment that, even decades later, felt charged with the spark of a fateful beginning. Before shipping out to serve his country, Bob summoned youthful courage and asked for Eileen’s hand in marriage by telephone—an audacious act of hope that shaped their future. On his homecoming, they wed, laying the foundation for a partnership that would endure until Eileen’s passing.
Bob’s patriotism was worn not just on his sleeve, but lived daily. He enlisted in the United States Navy, serving eight dedicated years. On the deck of the USS Constellation as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate, he bore witness to courage and the fierce bonds of brotherhood, experiences that would be marked indelibly into his character. An injury sustained during a deck flight explosion would bring his military career to an honorable close, but even as he left naval service, he never left behind the spirit of camaraderie, pride, and duty that had defined those years.
Returning to civilian life, Bob built a career of rare commitment and integrity. For nearly 35 years, he worked for Albertsons, most notably as a produce manager—a title that belied his meaningful impact. Revered throughout the company, he became known not only for his expertise but for the way he guided and inspired others, often helping to set up new stores and passing along his hard-earned knowledge. Even after retiring in 2004, Bob’s sense of purpose endured as he worked alongside his son, forging yet more bonds and memories that enriched his later years.
Outside the workplace, Bob was the heart of his circle—the uncle, the second dad, the man who drew people in with his easy laughter and love of storytelling. Fishing and camping were among his greatest pleasures, those long afternoons beside shimmering waters or beneath clear night skies serving as quiet backdrops to family lore and gentle wisdom. His outgoing nature, proud bearing, and generous spirit made his home a gathering place for family and friends alike; his absence will echo in many lives.
Bob’s proudest accomplishments were born of love. He cherished his children, family, and wife above all, holding them as his truest treasures. He missed Eileen every day after her passing, her memory a constant companion.
He is mourned and remembered by his loving children, Darren McGowan and Lisa (Dan) Oakleaf; his treasured granddaughter, Cyan Oakleaf; his devoted sisters, Phyllis Horton and Lorraine Lawyer; nieces Michelle Pitto and Donna Lunders; and his supportive brother-in-law Larry Windholtz and sister-in-law Gloria Robins. Jodi Lewis, the Montgomery, Vines, Stoops, Robins, and Oakleaf families—kin in affection if not in blood—will forever hold Bob close. He now joins his dearly missed father, Gilbert McGowan; mother, Arlene McGowan; and his beloved wife, Eileen, in peaceful rest.
With each story retold, each laugh in his memory, and each gentle reminder of his steadfast love, Robert “Bob” Eugene McGowan’s spirit lives on. To know him was to experience the warmth of family, the comfort of friendship, and the example of a life well and humbly lived.
