Spencer Ray Jones

December 16, 1946 — September 19, 2025

Listen to Obituary

Spencer Ray Jones was born on December 16, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas, to Hel’len Luis Nale and John Spencer Jones. He grew up alongside his siblings Ro’Blaine, John Keith, and Richard. During his high school years, the family moved to Riverton, Wyoming, where Spencer graduated in 1964 before attending Casper College.

In 1965, Spencer married his first love, Sharon Wilcox. Together they raised three children – Jennifer, Jana, and Jeremy – over 26 years of marriage. Following their divorce in 1991, Spencer married Dianne Schrock, with whom he became a father to her three children: Jesse, Christian, and Heather. Later, he found his lifelong companion and best friend in Carrie Spooner, the love of his life. With Carrie, Spencer enjoyed regular vacations to Mexico, karaoke nights, and simply being together.

In early 1967, Spencer answered his true call when he joined the Casper Fire Department. For 32 years, he served with courage, compassion, and an unwavering sense of duty. He retired in 1998 as both Fire Inspector and Captain – titles that reflected a long career of honors, accomplishments, and service toward others. Whether responding to house fires, traffic accidents, or search and rescues, Spencer helped save countless lives and earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members throughout Casper.

Even in retirement, he remained close with his fire department “brothers,” regularly attending reunions and sharing morning coffees, his bond with them as strong as ever. He will be remembered for his easy laugh, warm smile, and gift for making friends wherever he went. He loved cars and camping, karaoke and dancing, but above all, he loved people.

More than anything, Spencer’s greatest source of pride was his children. He cherished all six, and he made sure the world knew it. Whether he was celebrating their accomplishments, admiring how they faced a challenge, or boasting about them to anyone who would listen, his joy was undeniable. His pride in their journeys was as steady and enduring as his love for each of them.

In his family, in the firehouse, in the lives of all who knew and loved him, and in every sense of the word – Spencer Ray Jones was a Hero.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie; his six children – Jennie (John) Claypool, Jana Jones (Jeremy Sambrano), Jeremy (Jessica) Jones, Jesse Jones, Christian (Mariah) Jones, and Heather Olson; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and his brothers, Keith and Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ro’Blaine Zoller.

A celebration of Spencer’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 3, 2025 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 710 East Second Street, Casper, WY, 82601. Interment is scheduled at 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Mountain View Cemetery, 3540 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501.
