Susanne M. Higday
1934 - 2018

Susanne M. Higday passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY.

Susanne was born July 14, 1934, in Long Island, NY to Mary and John Montello.

When she was 12 years old her mother loaded her and her siblings into a car and moved to California. There she picked potatoes and threw them into bushel baskets that were then dumped into large bags. Once the potatoes were in the shed, they were dumped onto shakers. The little potatoes would fall through the holes and she was allowed to take the culls home for their use. She said they ate a lot of potatoes when she was growing up.

She also picked fruit as well as several other jobs. She laughed when she shared about being an usherette in the theater because she had to wear long purple pants.

It was in San Jose where she met the love of her life. She married Jim Higday on July 21, 1951. They loved to travel and attended several events throughout the country including The Grand Olde Opry, Reno Air Races, Gilroy Garlic Festival and Bishop Mule Days and they did some motorcycle touring.
Susanne also loved to visit her California family. She painted houses with her sister, Margaret, enjoyed time in Discovery Bay with her brother, John and many smiles and laughs with her nieces and nephews. One year she and Margaret took a trip to Long Island to locate the house where they use to live. They found the family house and also took in a baseball game while they were there.

She was a dedicated Bingo Player and well known at the Troopers Bingo Hall. In July she celebrated her 84th birthday with all of her family and friends enjoying an evening of bingo.

Susanne volunteered at the Wyoming Medical Center for many years. She loved delivering books and magazines to the patients. She also enjoyed working in the maternity ward welcoming new parents and their babies. She was proud of the pin she received for logging 3000 service hours.

Another activity she enjoyed was assisting Elizabeth Jennings in her classes at Cottonwood Elementary from 2007-2014. Each year for Christmas she made each student a special gift. Her airplanes made from lifesavers and other candy were always a hit.

She was an avid football fan and looked forward to watching the Broncos play.

Susanne is survived by her husband, Jim Higday; children, Ruth Sisk (Doug), Rapid City, SD, Mary Rager (Jerry), Casper, WY, Deborah Osborne (Richard), Sanford, FL and James Garth Higday, Bakersfield, CA; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and seven grand-furs; one brother, John Montello (Phuong), Discovery Bay, CA; several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Margaret DenBeste, and three brothers: Bill Montello, Richard Montello and Andrew Montello.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home (710 East Second St.) in Casper on Saturday December 8th at 2:00 pm. Following the service friends and family are invited to share stories and snacks at the home of Mary and Jerry Rager, 2610 Lynn Lane.
